sounding

The installation sounding was a site-specific piece that included a video loop projection onto a twenty-four foot sail, hand-lashed bamboo mast, Morse code key and transmitter, and a wooden toy boat. Sounding is a nautical term that refers to measuring the depth of water to insure a vessel’s safe passage. The imagery in the projection included found footage of a may pole dance, a aerial view of a platform diver, archival photographs from a nautical museum, and a short super-8 film featuring a woman writing shorthand with ink that disappears as it's written. References to navigation and communication were reinforced by the sound of the Morse code key and electronic transmitter.
